It may sound weird to boil omelets in a bag, but it works….it really does! And it is absolutely perfect for camping, everyone can pick their own toppings and then you just put all the bags in a big pot together. Hardly any clean up and you could even use the leftover water for washing dishes afterwards if you’d like. I’m all about multi-purposing, especially while camping.
Start by preparing the omelet toppings that everyone will be choosing from. Some suggestions might be chopped mushrooms, chopped green pepper, chopped onion, chopped tomato, chopped ham, and cheese. Meanwhile bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil.
Use a sharpie to write each person’s name on a quart size ziplock bag (we waited to do this once the bags were filled and it would have been a lot easier to do it beforehand). Crack 2-3 eggs in each ziplock bag. Use a whisk to scramble the eggs.
Have each person fill the bag with their desired toppings, don’t forget the cheese, salt, and pepper.
Close up the bags and place them in the large pot of boiling water.
Let them sit in the water for about 14 minutes, once they are done they will just slid out of the bag (careful, the plastic bags will be very hot…we took the bags out with tongs and let them cool for a minute in a plastic tub). Also note on the photo above: do not let the top of the bags drape over the pot. You can see we did that on the bag to the farthest left, and the steam melted the plastic bag. The omelet still turned out, it was just harder to open that bag.
Slide the omelet onto a plate and sprinkle with a little more cheese if you’d like, and enjoy the warm eggs without any dirty pans! That makes for some happy campers!
