Our Father’s Day weekend was family-filled with several outings. It was our town’s annual festival, which brings lots of extra happenings: sidewalk sales, a craft show, and the big feature is the Grand Parade on Friday night. This is the first parade that Tate really understood what was going on and got in on the action. He stood in awe of the fire trucks and sirens, but it wasn’t until he saw the first fistfuls of candy being thrown that his eyes really lit up. At one point I saw pieces of a tootsie roll wedged between every bottom tooth. Needless to say the parade was a hit. Afterwards I strategically hid his candy bag in the garage hoping he would forget it and not rot out all his teeth, and it was a success. However, now I am constantly making excuses to run out to the garage and then sneak pieces of candy.
On Saturday morning I ran in a 10K race (this helped with all the candy-eating guilt). TJ brought the boys to watch which always makes for a more meaningful race. Tate gets so excited to “watch mommy run!”. Seeing him on the course must have helped push me along, because I ended up placing third in my age group; it’s always exciting (and rare) to walk away from a race with some hardware! After the race I got showered up and ready for our family’s church directory photos. The pictures were at 3 pm and Tate had missed his afternoon nap. Trying to get an exhausted toddler to smile on cue? Obviously this was not a weekend highlight. For the next five years we are going to have some cranky looking kids in the church directory! (Still cute…but pretty cranky-looking).
On Sunday I got up with the boys and let TJ sleep in until 8:30 for Father’s Day. When you live with a toddler and a baby sleeping until 8:30 feels like noon! After he woke up we went golfing as a family. Tate loved running into every sand trap he could find and we let Carson crawl around on the putting greens. It was a nice reminder for me that outings with two kids are still achievable. Too often I find myself ruling out certain activities because I don’t think it would go well with our young boys; but they did great on the golf course. Tate can’t stop talking about it!
If you are in a pinch for a Father’s Day or birthday gift for a golfer I suggest purchasing a pack of balls, pulling out the colored sharpies and letting the kids go to town. Tate loved scribbling on all the golf balls. We wrapped them up for TJ and took them with us for our family golf outing. It is such a simple gift idea, but it was pretty special to see Tate get so excited for his dad to use the balls he helped make.
I hope your Father’s Day weekend was as enjoyable as ours! Comment below and let me know what you were up to!
